According to the government’s measures to reduce coal power generation over the past month, fine dust emissions decreased by 36% compared to the previous year.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy on the 10th, up to 17 coal-fired power plants were temporarily shut down last month. In addition, up to 46 power plants have implemented an upper limit limiting their power generation output to 80%.

This has the same effect as shutting down 20 to 25 coal generators, the Ministry of Industry explained. During this period, fine dust emissions decreased by 426 tons (36%) compared to the same period last year, and 1,139 tons (60%) decreased compared to 2018.

Despite the reduction in coal power generation, the power reserve ratio last month remained above 10%. However, due to the cold wave that hit the country this month, the demand for electricity has soared, raising concerns over supply and demand.
