“In case of anemia among patients at risk for cardiovascular disease, diabetes incidence rate is 37% higher”

5-year follow-up compared to non-anemic group

A study by Professor Seung-Woon Na’s research team at the Cardiovascular Center of Korea University Guro Hospital found that patients with anemia in the risk group for cardiovascular disease (elderly, angina, hypertension, coronary artery disease, etc.) had a higher risk of developing diabetes than those without.

The research team divided 17,515 patients without diabetes among the risk groups for cardiovascular disease who visited Korea University Guro Hospital from January 2004 to February 2013 into anemia (2907) and non-anemia (14,608) for five years. Followed up. As a result, 11.5% (122 people) of the anemia group and 7.9% (456 people) of the non-anemia group developed diabetes, and the incidence of diabetes in the anemia group was 37.3% higher than that of the non-anemic group. In addition, the mortality rate was 3.0% (42 patients) in the anemia group, four times higher than 0.8% (52 patients) in the non-anemia group, and the risk of myocardial infarction was also 1.3% (19 patients) in the anemia group, 0.4% ( 29), which was 3.2 times higher.

Until now, it has been known that anemia occurs very frequently in diabetic patients. However, on the contrary, studies analyzing the risk of diabetes in patients with anemia have been rare, and studies on diabetes incidence in the cardiovascular disease risk group have been very limited.

Prof. Na said, “Diabetes, known as a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease, has a great impact on long-term survival as well as quality of life, so diagnosis, management and prevention are very important.” “People who consider anemia as a mild disease There are a lot of them, but if left unattended, it not only increases the risk of diabetes, but also puts a strain on the heart and increases the risk of developing heart disease.

Choi Byung-geol, a research professor at Korea University’s Cardiovascular Research Institute, said, “Through this study, it was confirmed that the more severe anemia symptoms in the Koreans at risk for cardiovascular disease, the higher the risk of diabetes.” Due to the variety of diseases, it may have been linked to other diseases. In particular, people with coronary artery disease, high blood pressure patients, and the elderly who are at high risk for cardiovascular disease should ensure that anemia is not overlooked or ignored.”
