IMFSaid on February 18 (local time) that “the fiat currency issued by the central bank is facing a crisis in the digital age”.

# “The central bank should change like IT companies.”

IMFIn a blog post posted on the 18th, said the central bank should transform like IT companies in the future. For this reason, the IMF mentioned the emergence of digital currency. Currently, most big tech companies are systematically operating financial services with digital-based fiat currency systems. Recently, some IT companies have also introduced cryptocurrency.

IMF“I don’t think the current fiat currency can function properly in an era of rapid change. It will be difficult for the central bank to meet the new demands of the private sector with technological change. To solve this, we need to establish a system that can convert private sector assets into central bank currency.”

# “The era of coexistence with private currency will open”

IMFPredicted that the central bank alone could not prepare for a new era. He predicted that there should be a dual currency system that coexists with the private sector. Regarding this, “a system with only private currency is too dangerous. To do this, we need to create a dual currency system with central bank currency as a redemption option.” The IMF said, “If countries are to issue central bank digital currency, they should consider how to use the private sector. Central bank currency is essential for financial order even in the era of private currency. In this process, each country’s private currency will be managed differently according to the regulatory system of each central bank.”
