[세종=이데일리 원다연 기자] The government is promoting the revised animal protection law last month.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs will start the first joint public-private promotion campaign for animal protection and welfare this year from next week. This is to inform the changes of last month’s Animal Protection Act and compliance with dog safety management.
Due to the amendment of the Animal Protection Act last month, it became mandatory for owners of dogs to subscribe to liability insurance for dogs. In case of violation, a fine of not more than 3 million won is imposed.
Penalties for abandonment and abuse of animals have also been strengthened. For animal cruelty, imprisonment for not more than two years and not more than 20 million won were inflicted, but due to the revision of the Copper Protection Act, the punishment was reinforced with imprisonment for less than three years and less than 30 million won.
The punishment for abandonment of animals has been reinforced from a fine of less than 3 million won to a fine of less than 3 million won.
Animal registration by animal sellers has also been made mandatory. When an animal seller sells an animal subject to registration, it must apply for animal registration in the name of the purchaser, and sales of unregistered animals are restricted. In case of one violation, 7 days, in case of two violations, 15 days, and in case of three or more violations, business suspension is punishable for more than 1 month.
