A bunch of central government officials and planning real estate companies who bought farmland for market price gains were arrested by the police.

The Sejong Police Agency announced on the 6th that “45 people, including 6 government officials and planning real estate agents, were sent to the prosecution on charges of buying farmland for the purpose of’speculation’ without intending to build farming (violation of the Farmland Act).” All six of the public officials are incumbent, and they have been identified as level 5 or 7 employees in the same department within the central ministry.
Recruitment of investors for planning real estate “expected market gains”
According to the police, planning real estate agent A (52) and others established an agricultural company in October 2016 and purchased 17,200m2 of land such as Bongsan-ri and Jeonui-myeon, Jochiwon-eup, Sejong-si. Based on this, he received a’farmland acquisition qualification’ from Sejong City. After that, Mr. A and others mobilized a telephone salesperson and attracted investors, saying, “There are many good development opportunities in the vicinity, and market profits are expected.”
Mr. A and others made billions of dollars in profits by selling farmland to about 30 people who showed interest in acquiring farmland by splitting their stakes into pieces until July 2019.
After buying the land, get the’Farmland Acquisition Certificate’
The land buyers, including public officials, received a certificate of acquisition of farmland, saying, “I bought the land to run a weekend farm,” but the police investigation revealed it to be false. The police explained that all of them bought the land for a profit in the market.

This case was separate from the investigation of public officials in Sejong City and central government departments, which the police are investigating for real estate speculation related to the planned site of the Sejong Smart National Industrial Complex, which has recently unfolded.
An official from the Sejong Police Agency said, “The person who actually farms is suffering damage because of the person who purchased the farmland for speculation. “I’m going to do it,” he said.
