Samsung Display announced on the 26th that it has successfully commercialized OLED new organic materials that have significantly improved luminous efficiency compared to the previous work, and developed an OLED for smartphones that can reduce power consumption by more than 16%.
This panel was first applied to the Galaxy S21 Ultra, which was recently unveiled by Samsung Electronics.
OLEDs express colors through organic light-emitting materials that emit light by themselves when current flows without a separate light source. Therefore, organic material efficiency greatly affects the display’s power consumption, wide color gamut, high brightness, HDR, and outdoor visibility.
The organic material newly developed by Samsung Display significantly increased the luminous efficiency by improving the speed of electrons moving faster and easier in the organic material layer. This means that it can emit brighter light with less energy, which can help improve the usage time of smartphones in the 5G era where video viewing is increasing. The display is a key component that greatly affects the power consumption of a smartphone, and it can be expected to increase the smartphone usage time by reducing power consumption.
Ji-ho Baek, vice president of small and medium-sized strategic marketing at Samsung Display, said, “As display technologies such as large screens, high-speed driving, and high resolution continue to develop year by year, the demand for low-power technologies to effectively implement them is also growing.” Based on the industry’s best material technology, we will contribute to improving the performance of new products for our customers.”
