It is known that the military authorities will accurately determine the size of vegetarians and Muslim (Islamic) soldiers enlisted from next year and provide customized food excluding meat.

In particular, the Military Manpower Administration is planning to indicate that he is a’vegetarian’ on the personal statement prepared during the military service judgment test starting in February next year. This is meaningful in creating a system that allows’conscientious meat refusal’ before enlisting.

According to the Ministry of Defense on the 27th, from next year, vegetarians and Muslim soldiers will be provided with a vegan diet (vegan, a strict vegetarian diet that does not consume animal foods), excluding items containing meat such as meat and ham.

Accordingly, the military and military manpower administration decided to accurately determine the size of vegetarians and Muslims among soldiers enlisted from next year.

The Military Manpower Administration plans to create a “vegetarian” (Korean) and “Vegetarian” (English) label on the personal statement prepared during the military service judgment test and will be implemented from the time of the February test. Since this statement of information is sent to the unit where the enlisted will work, the unit can naturally grasp it and prepare measures for meals.

If such a system is settled, the military expects that there will be an effect of preventing a case where vegetarian soldiers are not able to disclose “vegetarian diet” because they are worried that they will be penalized after being assigned to the service unit.

A military official said, “Next year, as soon as the size of vegetarians and Muslim soldiers is identified, we will prepare a customized diet,” he said. “Yondubu, seaweed, fruit, salad, grain cereal, vegetable bibimbap, canned vegan, etc. will be the main items.” .

“By the army standard, soldiers need 3,000 ㎉ of calories a day, so they will organize their diet to meet this standard.”

We are also considering a plan to reflect soy milk and milk protein-free milk, which are preferred by soldiers, to service items on a pilot basis starting next year.

It is known that one of the soldiers currently serving in the military has officially identified himself as a vegetarian or a Muslim. The county reflects their opinions and provides foods other than meat.

It is reported that the Ministry of Defense recently reviewed vegetarian and Muslim-specific diets in consideration of the increasing number of vegetarian soldiers following the social vegetarian fever, including enlisted people from multicultural families.

The US military has a’salad bar’ in its troop restaurant, so there is no problem with vegetarianism, and the Finnish and Israeli forces only offer vegetarian menus for vegans.

Former USFK commander Vincent Brooks also practiced vegetarianism. The U.S. military side used to declare that former Commander Brooks was’vegetarian’ when he had an appointment for a luncheon or dinner with the generals of the Korean army and informed him of the food he did not eat.
