The average monthly private education expenditure per student last year decreased by 10.1% compared to the previous year due to the effect of the ban on gatherings due to the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19). However, the average monthly private education cost of students receiving private education was 434,000 won, a slight increase (1,000 won, 0.3%) from the previous year.

According to Statistics Korea’s’Educational Expenditure Survey Results’ of the National Statistical Office on the 9th, private education expenses per student last year amounted to 289,000 won. It decreased by more than 10% from 289,000 won in 2019. Private education expenses for elementary school students were 221,000 won, a 23.7% decrease from the previous year, and private education expenses for middle school students decreased 3.4% to 328,000 won. Private education expenses for high school students reached 388,000 won, an increase of 5.9% compared to the previous year.

The rate of participation in private education also recorded 66.5%, a 7.9 percentage point decrease from the previous year due to the impact of Corona 19. The rate of participation in private education was 69.2% for elementary school students, down 13.9% from the previous year, and 66.7% for middle school students, down 4.2% from the previous year. The rate of participation in private education among high school students was 60.7%, an increase of 0.3 percentage points from the previous year. The participation time for private education was in the order of junior high school students (6.0 hours), high school students (5.9 hours), and elementary school students (4.6 hours).

The average monthly private education expenses for math and English recorded 90,000 won, respectively, the most expenditure, followed by physical education and Korean, respectively, at 24,000 won. Families with student children spent an average of 10,000 won or more per month on music (19,000 won), social science (13,000 won), and art (11,000 won).

As a result of this survey, it was found that private education expenses for subjects of the age group that are directly connected to college entrance examinations or before the math proficiency test have a limited decrease or a tendency to increase. Private education expenses for general subjects such as mathematics and English fell 3.0% year-on-year to 230,000 won, while arts and sports private education expenses decreased 30.1% year-on-year to 58,000 won. The same reason is also interpreted as the 5.9% increase in private education expenses for high school students.

There was a large variation in private education expenses by household income. Households with monthly incomes of 8 million won or more spent 504,000 won per student, and those with less than 2 million won spent 99,000 won per student, respectively, as private education expenses. The rate of participation in private education also recorded 80.1% of households with monthly income of 8 million won or more and 39.9% of households with less than 2 million won.

By region, the average monthly private education expenditure for students in Seoul was 433,00 won, followed by small and medium-sized cities (282,000 won), metropolitan cities (279,000 won), and eup-myeon (184,000 won).

An official from the National Statistical Office said, “The increase in private education expenses of students participating in private education last year (0.3%) was the lowest since the 2007 survey.” Said.
