A struggle for survival is on the verge of a record cold and winter storm in the United States. The electricity that was cut off by cold waves everywhere was not restored. On the 17th (local time), CNN broadcasted the case of Texas residents suffering from an unusual cold wave.

Millions of Texas residents spent 72 hours in icy houses from the 15th to the day when electricity was cut off. Timothy Wilshey, his wife Nicole, and their seven-year-old son, who live in Euless, Texas, rely on the warmth of the candlelight to wait for power to come back under their blankets. Smartphones, the only means of communication with the outside world, are charged in the vehicle. I can’t cook food, so I endure with snacks and bottled water, and I search for restaurants that have opened.

Kimberly Hampton of Irving, Texas, has been seeking firewood and burning fire. As the refrigerator became jammed, it was impossible to use frozen breast milk for the baby. He said to CNN, “The kids don’t understand why it suddenly became such a miserable situation.”

The mother said she burned a 3-year-old baby’s toy because of lack of firewood, and she shed tears during an interview.

According to the New York Times (NYT), at least 31 people died in the United States in a cold wave. There have also been cases of death from carbon monoxide poisoning while turning on the heat in a car or using a fireplace to avoid the cold.

In Houston, Texas, two family members living in parked cars died of carbon monoxide poisoning, and three family members, including grandmother and grandson, died in a fire after setting a fire in a fireplace. In Fort Worth, 13 children were treated for carbon monoxide poisoning, and Harris also reported more than 200 cases of poisoning.

The arctic cold wave is expected to continue for some time. The National Meteorological Administration (NWS) said that for the time being, temperatures in the central and southern parts of the United States will remain below -20 to 35 degrees Celsius on average.
