The so-called’Steve Seung-jun Yu’s military service issue’ dates back to August 2001. Yoo, who was the most popular in Korea at the time, was diagnosed with a 4th grade physical examination after undergoing lumbar disc surgery. As it was gaining popularity, his enlistment was actually a concern of the whole people, so that various entertainment broadcasts at the time showed Yoo’s physical examination process as it was. However, Yoo Seung-jun suddenly acquired US citizenship before enlisting, causing social resentment. After going through the procedure for obtaining US citizenship in a court in Los Angeles, USA in January 2002, Yoo went to the local consulate general of the Republic of Korea and announced his intention to renounce Korean citizenship.

At the time the controversy over whether he intentionally evaded military service, the legal representative of Seung-Jun Yoo said, “When Seung-Jun Yoo immigrated to the United States in his first year of middle school, all of his family had permanent residency. Yoo Seung-joon made an unwise choice at the Man-Ryu,” he stressed that there was no purpose to evade military service.

After that, on February 2, 2002, Yoo took out the passport of the US name Steve Seung Joon-yu from Incheon International Airport, but was denied entry in accordance with Article 11 of the Immigration Control Act of the immigration office.

In the midst of this, Mr. Yoo filed an administrative lawsuit in 2015 to allow overseas Koreans to enter the country with a visa. The first and second trials decided that the government’s refusal to issue a visa was legitimate. However, the Supreme Court destroyed and repatriated in November 2019 with the intent of canceling the denial of visa issuance, and Yoo won the Supreme Court in March of last year after going through a revocation review.

However, Yoo’s hopes to enter Korea were again frustrated. The government won the lawsuit for canceling the visa issuance refusal with the government, but the government did not allow entry based on the Overseas Koreans Act, which states that if Yoo enters Korea, it may interfere with Korea’s security, order and public welfare. Yoo’s side immediately expressed regret. Yoo’s lawyers said, “Yu is just a celebrity that was popular 20 years ago, and is neither a terrorist nor a chaebol,” and stressed that “Yu has been criticized and ridiculed over the past 18 years, but regrets the choices of the past.” He said, “I really want to ask the government if there is any concern that Seung-Jun Yoo may harm the interests of the Republic of Korea, such as guaranteeing security and maintaining order in Korea.”

Meanwhile, Yoo’s YouTube channel is known to be increasing in views and profits based on the point at which Yoo expressed his anger at the government.
