Ryu Hyun-jin, the’Korean Monster’ of the American Professional Baseball Major League (MLB) Toroton Blue Jays, ranked 6th in the 2021 season starting pitcher rankings selected by the MLB Network.
After ranking 5th last year, it is in the top 10 for two consecutive years.
In the rankings released on the 29th, Ryu Hyun-jin was followed by Jacob DeGrom (New York Mets), Gerrit Cole (New York Yankees), Max Sherzer (Washington Nationals), Trevor Bower (free agent), and Shane Bieber (Cleveland Indians).
The Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw was ranked 7th after Ryu Hyun-jin.
Ryu Hyun-jin is the only Asian player among the top 10 pitchers.
The MLB Network ranks each year by synthesizing indicators such as adjusted average ERA (ERA+), defense-free pitch (FIP), RA9 (loss per 9 innings), and WAR (contribution to victory over substitute players) for the last two seasons each year.
Ryu Hyun-jin played for the Dodgers in 2019 with an average ERA of 14-5 and 2.32, ranking first in the MLB average ERA ranking. That year, the WAR reached a whopping 4.8.
After moving to Toronto, Ryu Hyun-jin started 12 times in the 60-game shortened season last year, recording an average ERA of 5-2 and 2.69.
He was nominated for Cy Young for the second year in a row, and was recognized as the best pitcher in the MLB.
Ryu Hyun-jin also placed fifth in the MLB Network’s starting pitching rankings last year after DeGrom, Justin Verlander (Houston Astros), Cole, and Sherzer.
