It was investigated that Hyundai Motor Company has solidified its position as a market leader by significantly increasing sales volume and accounting for nearly 70% of the global hydrogen car market despite the negative growth of the global hydrogen car market last year.

According to SNE Research, an energy-specialized market research firm on the 17th, Hyundai Motors sold about 6,500 hydrogen cars with a 33.6% increase in global Nexo sales last year.

Last year was the first time that Hyundai Motors’ global hydrogen car sales exceeded 6,000 units, and its market share soared from 45.3% last year to 69.0%. Seven out of ten hydrogen cars sold worldwide last year were Hyundai cars.

Last year, worldwide hydrogen car sales amounted to 9,000 units, down 11.3% from the previous year. This is because the sales volume of Toyota Mirai and Honda Clarity decreased significantly due to deterioration of models.

Last year, Toyota sold 1600 units, down 33.2% from the previous year, and Honda sold 200 units, down 33.8%.

Global hydrogen vehicle sales in the fourth quarter of last year also decreased by 26.0% from the same period last year to only 2,800 units due to the reduction of subsidies in China, the world’s second-largest market.

However, when Toyota launched a new Mirai second-generation model in Japan, its sales rose more than doubled.

This year, the second-generation Toyota Mirai is expected to intensify competition between Hyundai Motor Company and Toyota, which ranked No. 1 in terms of market share, as the second-generation Toyota Mirai models are launched one after another in the United States and other countries after Japan.

An official from SNE Research said, “The market size, which was slightly reduced compared to the previous year, will also rebound, and we will not only surpass 10,000 units on an annual basis, but also achieve an all-time high.”
