It was confirmed on the 18th that Hyundai Motor Company has decided to replace all 33,000 batteries of Kona Electric electric vehicles sold in Korea.

Hyundai Motor Company plans to submit a recall plan to replace all batteries to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 19th. The recall plan to be submitted to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport reflects only the domestic sales volume recall plan. It has not yet been decided whether to replace the battery of the Kona electric vehicle sold overseas.

Kona electric cars have been sold in Korea since May 2018. Until January of this year, the cumulative sales of Kona electric vehicles totaled 32,854 units (cumulative 11,193 units in 2018, 13,587 units in 2019, 8,66 units in 2020).

Most of the Kona electric vehicles sold in Korea are LG Energy Solution products, and some vehicles have SK Innovation batteries due to supply and demand problems. This replacement of the entire battery will be performed only on vehicles equipped with LG Energy Solution products.

Hyundai Motor Company is expected to spend trillions of won on replacing all Kona electric vehicle batteries.

It is not known how Hyundai will change the battery yet. There are also observations that the replacement work centered on a service center under direct management may be carried out because the Hyundai Blue Hands repair shop in Korea does not have the ability to directly replace electric vehicle batteries.

The replacement of all Kona EV batteries is expected to take several months. This is because it takes more than half a day to replace the battery per EV.

It is known that the battery of the accident vehicle is currently being stored at the Namyang Research Center of Hyundai-Kia Motors in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do. It will take some time until the exact cause of the fire is identified.
