[시사포커스 / 강민 기자] The possibility of replacing all Kona EV batteries was raised.

According to the automaker industry on the 18th, Hyundai Motor Company submits a recall plan to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on the 19th, and there is a possibility that it contained such details. However, a variable is the situation in which joint investigation teams such as the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Korea Automobile Research Institute have not clearly identified the cause of the defect, and consultations with LG Energy Solutions have not been completed.

It is known that Hyundai Motor Company and LG Energy Solution maintain a position that “there is no information to disclose because the investigation has not been completed,” but they are known to show tight differences over the scope of compensation and the ratio of responsibility.

Some analysts say that Hyundai Motor Company will secure trust through a responsible attitude by expanding its recall overseas ahead of the launch of Ionic. Global Kona EV sales amounted to 77,000 units. If the battery cells, battery packs, and battery management systems (BMS) of Kona EVs around the world are completely replaced as claimed, the estimated cost is expected to exceed 1 trillion won.

Kona EV fires have been reported in 11 domestic and 4 overseas fires.

An official from the electric vehicle battery industry who requested anonymity said, “As a fire breaks out in electric vehicles and electric buses equipped with LG Energy Solution batteries, Hyundai will want to replace the battery company if only the quantity is supported.” “It is not a problem, but because it has the potential to affect the entire electric vehicle brand that is about to launch, we can make a big decision.”

Meanwhile, on the 15th, in Changwon, Gyeongnam, a fire broke out in a driving electric bus made by Hyundai Motor and equipped with an LG Energy Solution battery.
