Hyundai Motor Group puts Apple cars to a halt, speeding up its own electric cars

The Hyundai Motor Group has been accelerating the future mobility business since the beginning of this year.

The issue of the’Apple Car’ collaboration that caused the market to sway over the past month has once subsided under the water, but results are showing little by little as they put their energy into future businesses such as electric vehicles, robotics, and urban air mobility (UAM).

According to the industry on the 13th, Hyundai Motor Group is planning to introduce Kia CV (project name) and Genesis JW (project name) one after another, starting with the first dedicated electric vehicle Ioniq 5 to be released in Europe next month.

Dedicated electric vehicles based on E-GMP, the Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated electric vehicle platform, can travel up to 500 km or more on a single charge, allowing them to travel from Seoul to Busan at once. In addition, it is equipped with an 800V charging system, so it can charge 80% within 18 minutes when using a super fast charger.

Hyundai Motor Company[005380]Plans to launch a total of 12 electric vehicles by 2025 and sell 560,000 units per year, increasing the proportion of electric vehicle sales in the global market by 10%. The goal is to achieve 8-10% of the global electric vehicle market share by 2040.

Kia, which recently removed the car from its mission, has declared this year as the “first year of Kia’s transformation.” Kia plans to release 7 exclusive electric vehicles by 2026, one year ahead of the original plan, to build a full lineup of 11 electric vehicles, and to sell 1.6 million eco-friendly vehicles annually by 2030.

Kia is also strengthening its purpose-based mobility (PBV) business. Next year, the first PBV model and dedicated taxi will be released, and later, PBVs specialized for cargo loading and PBVs specialized for vehicle (car + lodging) and leisure will also be released sequentially.

As Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Eui-sun Eui-sun said at a town hall meeting in 2019, “50% of the future business of Hyundai Motor Group will be handled by automobiles, 30% by UAM, and 20% by robotics.” .

In the case of UAM, as Urban Airport of the UK, which signed a business agreement last year, was recently selected as the construction operator of the flying car airport’Air One’, which the UK government has conspired to, Hyundai Motor Group also participated in the construction of UAM infrastructure.

Air One is the world’s first flying car airport, and Hyundai Motor Group is expected to participate in aircraft development and airport design with other partners. Hyundai Motor Group is developing UAM with the aim of commercialization in 2028.

Hyundai Motor Group, which announced at the end of last year that it will take over Boston Dynamics, which is famous for its `robot dog`, recently drew attention by unveiling the walking car `TIGER` through its YouTube.

Developed by New Horizons Studio, an organization in charge of future mobility under the group, Tiger is a transforming robot that can move freely even in rough terrain while walking with four legs and wheels.

Tiger uses the walking ability of a robotic leg when traversing uneven terrain or over obstacles, and transforms into a four-wheel drive vehicle by tucking the leg inward on flat terrain. It is still experimental, but when mass-produced, it is expected that it will be possible to carry emergency supplies to remote areas or remote locations, or to conduct scientific exploration and research using sensors and instrument panels.

It is also spurring the development of autonomous driving technology.

‘Motional’, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, plans to provide a fully autonomous vehicle-based robotaxi service in major regions in the United States from 2023.

On the other hand, in connection with the theory of cooperation for autonomous electric vehicles with Apple, which has recently attracted attention, Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 8th that “there is not conducting discussions on the development of autonomous vehicles with Apple,” drawing a line.

For this reason, Hyundai Motor Group shares, which had been on the rise since the beginning of the year, fell at a time, but rebounded again as the backlash buying trend inflows.

In the industry, discussions with Apple have been temporarily suspended, but there is a possibility that negotiations with Apple will resume in the future. Also, based on the announcement, there is still room for cooperation with Apple on electric vehicles.

Some say that it confirmed the competitiveness of Hyundai Motor Group.

Moonsoo Jang Hyundai Motor Securities[001500] The researcher said, “Experience in mass production of electric vehicles, production capacity and supply chains at major sales bases, and having a competitive platform that can reduce cost during mass production are key factors to consider for the cooperation of tech companies.” The possibility of collaboration with companies will be high.”
