Hyundai Motor Company and Kia start smoothly with US sales increase from the beginning of the year

Despite the aftermath of the coronavirus infection (Corona 19), Hyundai and Kia Motors started a strong start by increasing vehicle sales in the US market this year. Both companies have grown for two consecutive months since last December.

Hyundai Motor’s January sales to vehicle dealers (wholesale) totaled 43,394 units, up 2% from January last year. Combined with Genesis, the wholesale performance is 46,208 units, and the growth rate jumps further to 4.7%.

In particular, retail sales to individual customers recorded an all-time high in January sales. Last month, retail sales increased 1% year-on-year to 4,497 units, and fleet sales to businesses and car rental companies increased 12%, accounting for 6% of the total sales.

Among retail sales, sports utility vehicles (SUVs) accounted for 69%. SUV sales increased 11% year-on-year, leading to improved performance. Models such as Venue (34%), Kona (9%), Tucson (1%), and Santa Fe (45%) have evenly increased their sales.

In the case of Genesis, a total of 2814 units were sold, more than doubled from 1399 units in January last year. Hyundai Motor said, “The GV80, the Genesis SUV model, which began to be sold in the US market in earnest from the end of last year, became popular and the sales volume of Genesis increased significantly. GV80 sales in the U.S., which reached 58 units in November last year, jumped from 1459 units in December to 1512 units last month.

Kia’s sales growth in the US in January this year compared to the same month last year was 11.4%, higher than that of Hyundai. A total of 44,965 units were sold on a wholesale basis. According to Kia’s U.S. sales subsidiary, SUVs such as Telluride, Niro, and Seltos were also leading the rise in sales. If it is limited to SUVs, this is a 21.2% increase from January last year. The proportion of SUVs accounted for two-thirds of all Kia car sales in the US in January.

By car type, there were 8714 Santa Fe, 7980 Tucson, 7088 Avante, 7021 K3, 6626 Telluride, and 5913 Sportage.
