Toluene, which causes peculiar odor, headache, and sore eyes in Hyundai Motor Company’s GV80, exceeded the recommended standard.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 13th that the results were obtained as a result of a survey of the indoor air quality of new cars conducted on 7 car models from 4 companies manufactured and sold in Korea in 2020.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has recommended 8 volatile hazardous substances such as formaldehyde, toluene, ethylbenzene, styrene, benzene, xylene, arrolein, and acetaldehyde released from interior materials for automobiles newly manufactured and sold every year in Korea since 2011. The results have been published by investigating whether the standards are met.

In this survey, GV80 recorded 1742.1㎍/㎥ more than the recommended standard of 1000㎍/㎥.

An official from the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs estimated that “the vehicle has confirmed the history of external painting rework, and toluene particles from the paint used during the rework to shorten the painting drying time have flowed into the vehicle cabin.”

Toluene is a volatile organic compound that is mainly emitted from finishes used in automobiles, and although it is a non-carcinogenic substance, it generally generates a peculiar odor in a new car and can cause symptoms such as sore head or sore eyes.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport recommended corrective actions to prevent recurrence of the same matters to the vehicle manufacturers in accordance with the’Indoor Air Quality Management Standards for Newly Made Vehicles’.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport also does not stipulate otherwise in the related standards, but as a result of additional tests of two vehicles of the same type and vehicles exceeding the recommended toluene standards, the toluene concentrations recorded 52.4 ㎍/㎥ and 246.9 ㎍/㎥ respectively, satisfying the recommended standards. did.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport is planning to thoroughly manage indoor air quality by conducting a follow-up survey on the vehicle type in this year’s new car indoor air quality survey.

“Volatile pollutants in new cars mostly disappear after two to three months after delivery,” said Lee Chang-gi, head of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. He added, “We plan to revise related notices, including post-management improvement measures for vehicles exceeding the recommended indoor air quality standards, in order to continue to encourage the voluntary implementation efforts of automobile manufacturers.”
