Huawei unveils foldable’Mate X2’… “Thinner and no gap than the Galaxy Z Fold 2”

Huawei unveiled its third foldable smartphone’Mate X2′ on the 22nd. The Mate X2 is Huawei’s first in-folding (folding in) foldable smartphone. Huawei will sell the Mate X2 in China starting on the 25th.

Mate X2 adopts an in-folding method similar to Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy Z Fold 2. This is the first time Huawei has adopted the in-folding method. Last year, it introduced’Mate Xs’, an out-folding method, and’Mate X’, which is the same method in 2019.

Mate X2 has an 8.1-inch (2480×2200) internal OLED display, and a 6.45-inch (2700×1160) OLED display on the outside. Both screens support 90Hz refresh rates. It is equipped with a mobile application processor (AP) Kirin 9000 chipset, and has a 4,500mAh battery in 8GB of RAM. It supports 55W fast charging.

On the rear side, ▲ a 50-megapixel wide-angle camera ▲ a 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera ▲ a 12-megapixel telephoto camera (3x optical zoom) ▲ an 8-megapixel super zoom camera (10x optical zoom) is mounted. The front was equipped with a 16 million pixel camera.

At this event, Huawei CEO Richard Wie compared the Mate X2 with the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and emphasized “The display is bigger than the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and there is no gap in the middle when folded” and “The thinnest part is 4.4mm.” did.

Mate X2 will be sold in China starting on the 25th of this month, and whether it will be released overseas is undecided. Available in four colors: crystal blue, crystal pink, white, and black. The price is 17,999 yuan (about 3,100,000 won) for a model with 256GB internal storage, and 18,999 yuan (about 3,270,000 won) for a model with 512GB internal storage.

Huawei CEO Richard Wei said, “We have enough capacity to produce the Mate X2.” “Huawei flagship smartphone users will be updated to Harmony OS from April, and the Mate X2 is the first to be upgraded to Harmony OS. It will be a phone.”

Huawei announced its own Harmony OS in 2019 when it became difficult to use Google OS Android due to US government sanctions. Harmony OS was previously only available on TV, but Harmony OS 2.0, which Huawei released last year, made it available to PCs, smart watches, and smartphones. Huawei plans to make more of its IoT products run on Harmony OS in the future.

On the other hand, Huawei officially announced that it had no plans to sell its premium smartphone brand, although the smartphone business became difficult due to US sanctions.

According to industry sources, Huawei is planning to ship 70 to 80 million smartphones this year. This is a decrease of more than 60% compared to last year’s 183 million units shipments. According to the market research firm Trend Force, Huawei is expected to be pushed to the 7th place in the smartphone market next year in terms of production volume.
