Demanding a wage increase HMM(011200)(Formerly Hyundai Merchant Marine) 97.3% of union members supported the strike. If wage collective negotiations are not held until the end of the year, and HMM’s strike becomes a reality, a’logistics disruption’ is expected to be inevitable.
According to industry sources on the 27th, the HMM Maritime Union Labor Union voted for and against the industrial action on the 26th of 369 members regarding the wage increase this year, and 97.3% supported the industrial action. If negotiations break down at the 2nd labor-management coordination meeting on the 31st, the HMM union could enter into an industrial action such as refusal to board board from January 1 of next year. Earlier, HMM labor and management held the first mediation meeting presided over by the Central Labor Committee on the 23rd, but could not reach an agreement.
The union raised a question about suggesting a 1% annual salary increase, although the company achieved the highest performance this year. HMM employees are largely divided into sailors on board and onshore employees, and their wages are frozen for 6 and 8 years, respectively. Since 2012, the HMM Haewon Union Labor Union demands that wages should be increased by 8% according to the price index increase of 8%. HMM agrees with the wage increase itself, but 8% is a burden. In particular, it is difficult to significantly raise wages immediately because of profits under the creditor management system. If HMM’s strike becomes a reality, the’export crisis’ is inevitable. In this case, the export company suffers from the double grief of the shortage of container ships following the recent surge in freight rates.
