Highest after 12 years of movie theater closure

81 movie theaters nationwide closed last year

52 local cities and 21 in Incheon alone

The number of theaters closed last year in the aftermath of Corona 19 reached the highest level in 12 years.

[국토일보 이경옥 기자] The cold wave of Corona 19 hit the movie industry following the multi-use facility gym and karaoke room.

As a result of an analysis of statistics from the Commercial Information Research Center and the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, a profitable real estate research and development company on the 26th, 81 movie theaters closed last year across the country. This is an increase of about 88.4% compared to the number of closed businesses in 2019. It also reached the highest level in 12 years after 88 places in 2008, which experienced the financial crisis.

Business closures by region were followed by 21 in Incheon, followed by Gyeonggi (4), Seoul (2), Busan, and Daegu (1), and there were no Gwangju, Ulsan, and Daejeon. In particular, 52 movie theaters were closed in rural cities alone.

The closing of movie theaters had an effect on related businesses as well.

An official from the movie theater beverage supplier in the shopping mall in Hanam said, “With the spread of Corona 19, the delivery volume decreased by more than 90% than before, and we had a difficult year.

However, the number of movie theaters opened last year was 218, an increase of 45 from 173 in 2019.

An industry insider said, “The increase in the number of openings last year is already scheduled and does not mean the industry is booming.”

Researcher Cho Hyun-taek of the Shopping Center Information Research Center said, “The movie theater is a closed space, and due to relatively strict guidelines such as not to sit a space and eat some food, the number of viewers plunged and sales also decreased.” It was postponed, and due to the aggravation of the damage, business closures increased.
