Son Heung-min (29, Tottenham Hotspur)’s English Premier League (EPL) game will be shown on Coupang’s online video service (OTT)’Coupang Play’. As Coupang announced that it will secure large-scale investments ahead of the listing on the New York Stock Exchange, it is expected to expand its OTT competitiveness by securing various contents including the right to broadcast sports events in the future.

According to the industry on the 26th, Acla Entertainment and Coupang, which have domestic broadcast rights of EPL, will finish negotiations for digital broadcast rights and broadcast Tottenham Hotspur’s match at Coupang Play.

Akra Entertainment’s EPL digital broadcasting rights were originally contracted with Naver. However, as negotiations with Naver broke down in 2019, the EPL game could only be watched through Akla Entertainment’s sports channel, SPOTV.

Since then, Coupang has been in contact with several production companies and content distributors to supply and supply exclusive contents ahead of the launch of Coupang Play in December of last year, and among them, it is known that they have been discussing with Akla Entertainment for a long time. Coupang Play is a service that anyone with Wow Membership (2,900 won per month) can enjoy unlimited streaming services at no additional cost.

In the future, Coupang is expected to focus on enhancing the competitiveness of Coupang Play by exclusively contracting for various sports broadcasting rights including EPL digital broadcasting rights. Last month, Coupang Play’s monthly users (MAU) was 520,000 based on Android operating system (OS). Compared to Netflix (6.8 million), Wave (302 million), Teabing (179 million), and Watcha (91 million), the number of users is still small.

Meanwhile, Coupang, which announced listing on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), set a goal of raising a total of 1 billion dollars (about 1 trillion won).
