Hanwha Energy grows into a power supply stabilization solution company

Dominate the market by securing preemptive technology

[투데이에너지 류희선 기자] Hanwha Energy, which has been proactively pursuing the power grid stabilization solution business with the increase in new and renewable power generation worldwide, is attracting attention to the ESS-based power grid stabilization solution business. I am running a business.

Hanwha Energy recently announced that it has been receiving orders for large-scale ESS business contracts in the United States. Unlike the previous order for the ESS business linked to the solar power plant, the project received this time is meaningful as an ESS exclusive project to stabilize the power grid.

Hanwha Energy announced on the 23rd that it has won the Astoria Project with an ESS of 400MWh being promoted in New York State, USA. Through a contract with ConEdison NY, a large U.S. electric power company, it will be responsible for not only battery design and construction, but also 7 years of operation.

In November, it also won an order for the 240MWh ESS project (Silver Pick Project) in Nevada.

Hanwha Energy has already laid the foundation for the energy solution business for stabilizing the power grid by promoting the ESS-based frequency control business and the business of building solar power plants and ESS together before winning the order for the ESS single business to stabilize the power grid.

In October, it was selected as the final contractor for the solar power 79MW and ESS 240MWh connection project (Coupe Howe Solar Project) hosted by the Hawaii Electric Power Authority (HECO) in the United States.

In December 2018, Hawaii also won an order of 83MW solar power and 208MWh ESS project (Hohana Solar Project). In July, it also signed a contract to sell power with Nevada Energy for a power generation project (Boulder Solar Project) with a scale of 164MW solar power and 230MWh ESS in Nevada, USA along with Korea Midland Power.

In particular, the 120MWh ESS facility in Ireland, which Hanwha Energy has won orders for in the second half of last year and is being built with the goal of operation in the second half of next year, is an ESS business that performs frequency regulation (FR) so that the power plant maintains constant exchange and supplies power.

Through this project, Hanwha Energy is expected to be able to preoccupy the market by securing preemptive technology in the frequency regulation business and to grow its presence as a global power grid stabilization solution provider.

In the future, as the composition of power sources in the global power market is rapidly reorganized into renewable energy, rapid growth of the ESS business is expected to stabilize power supply. In this situation, Hanwha Energy is planning to expand its energy-related business areas with unrivaled competitiveness by expanding not only the solar power generation business, but also the energy solution business for stabilizing technology-based power supply.
