[News Quest = Reporter Kim Bo-min]Kim Seung-yeon, the eldest son of Hanwha Group Chairman Kim Dong-gwan (38), Hanwha Solutions President (pictured) takes over Hanwha’s space industry and paints the future of the group anew.

President Kim is leading Hanwha’s green and hydrogen business as well as the defense industry, one of the group’s flagship businesses, and is expanding the scope of activities to the space business.

Hanwha said on the 7th, “The’Space Hub’ will be launched to direct the overall space industry scattered across several affiliates in the group.”

The space hub, which the group is ambitiously pursuing, is centered on the engineers of Hanwha Aerospace, a defense subsidiary, who participated in the development of the Korean launch vehicle’Nuri’.

In addition, Hanwha Systems’ communication and imaging equipment, Hanwha’s weapon system specialists, and Hanwha Aerospace’s 30% stake in Korea’s first satellite specialist, Setrec-I, will also participate.

While monitoring trends in overseas private space projects, Space Hub decided to focus on research and investment by dividing into the fields of production such as launch vehicles and satellites, and the fields of communication, earth observation, and energy services.

President Kim said, “The space industry is a field that someone has to do,” and said, “We will find a shortcut to space with our engineers as we need expertise and full support in order to compete with global companies.”

It had already been predicted that President Kim’s role would increase in the space industry, one of Hanwha’s future business areas.

Kim, who is concurrently serving as the president of Hanwha Solutions and the head of Hanwha’s strategic division, is scheduled to be appointed as the executive director of Aerospace on the 29th.

It has not been known what specific position he will assume, but Space Hub’Team Leader’ became his first role.

In related industries, it is evaluated that Hanwha has secured important technologies for expansion of the space business through the acquisition of the stake of Setrec I.

However, at present, related functions and technologies are scattered by affiliates, and they are limited to the level of simple collaboration, but the role of’space hub’ is to draw specific business blueprints by putting them together.

Hanwha emphasized, “We can load the Setrec Eye satellite on the aerospace launch vehicle and mount the Hanwha Systems communication system.”
