According to the Hindustan Times and AFP news agency on the 4th, a firefight between security forces and Maoist rebels in the jungle of Bijapur district in Chattisgarh took place for more than three hours until sunset.

A police official announced that “the security forces were ambushed while returning from the search operation in the jungle of Bijapur.”

On the previous day, the bodies of five soldiers were recovered, and 17 more were killed on that day.

Thirty-two soldiers were injured and taken to the hospital, and the search for the remaining missing soldiers continues. Police said the number of deaths could increase further.

The Maoist rebels also suffered casualties, and although the exact amount of damage is unknown, two bodies were recovered at the scene.

Indian Maoists, who follow Chinese Communist Party leader Mao Zedong, began their activities in the late 1960s with the aim of building a communist society.

It is estimated that about 6,500 to 9,500 people are currently active in Maharashtra, Chatisgar, eastern Odisha and northern Bihar.

Guerilla warfare continues in the name of fighting for the rights and property of indigenous tribesmen.

They often engage in terrorism, especially in the election season, to cause social chaos and to show off their presence.

At the time of the 2019 general election, 15 people were killed when a police commando vehicle was exploded in Maharashtra.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “I mourn those who died fighting the Maoists in Chatisgarh,” and “I will never forget the sacrifice of a brave martyr.”
