[이코노믹리뷰=박민규 기자] In order to realize the ‘2050 carbon neutral promotion strategy’, the government will invest about 151.1 billion won in the climate and environment research and development (R&D) field next year.

The Ministry of Science and Technology Information and Communication announced on the 30th, and decided to pursue the ‘2021 Climate and Environment R&D Project Implementation Plan’ in earnest. The total cost of the project is 1573 billion won, an increase of 12.9% (171.88 billion won) from the 132.8 billion won this year.

Earlier, on the 7th, the government announced a strategy for promoting carbon neutrality in 2050 to zero (0) net carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. In order to support this, the Ministry of Science and ICT is the next year’s climate and environment R&D project focusing on ▲ energy efficiency improvement technology development ▲ hydrogen fuel cell source technology development ▲ renewable energy source technology development ▲ carbon capture, storage, conversion technology development and empirical research. It is a position to expand the budget of the company.

The government provides 7.2 billion won to develop energy efficiency improvement technologies to reduce carbon consumption and produce electricity as much as before. This includes related tasks such as building energy efficiency system, cooling system, integrated energy resource management network (smart grid), and information and communication technology (ICT).

In addition, 17.4 billion won is spent in research on technologies such as low-temperature water electrolysis and chemical storage to produce and store hydrogen in an eco-friendly way. The government provides 11.4 billion won for the development of core fuel cell technologies, and a total of 34.6 billion won for renewable energy fields such as rechargeable batteries and solar cells.

More than 46.6 billion won will be invested in projects that capture and store carbon or convert it into energy.

Meanwhile, a total of 22.5 billion won will be spent to observe and reduce the concentration of fine dust using the air and ocean observation satellite, Cheonrian 2B.

Kim Bong-soo, the Basic Source Research Policy Officer of the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, “To achieve the goal of ‘2050 carbon neutral’, (the government) will promote the project with a sense of speed and plan new R&D projects.”
