The government is speeding up the spread of wind power to increase the share of renewable energy. Introducing an integrated organization (one-stop shop) that collectively processes power generation licenses, and promotes distribution by promoting large-scale offshore wind power projects centered on local governments.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy organized the’Wind Power Round Table’, a public-private communication channel in the wind power sector, following the’Solar Power Round Table’ to realize carbon neutrality, and will hold the first meeting at Dalgaebi, a conference house in Jung-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 26th.

The wind power roundtable, composed of government, public institutions, industry, academia, and research experts, was prepared to share the government’s carbon neutral policy direction and to discover and discuss various policy demands for carbon neutrality.

Wind power is an essential renewable energy source along with solar power to achieve carbon neutrality and achieve the renewable energy 3020 target. Wind power is also showing rapid growth in the world and is expected to occupy a high proportion of all renewable energy sources in the future.

According to market research firm BNEF, the global offshore wind power installation capacity, which reached 29.1 gigawatts (GW) in 2019, is expected to increase to 177 GW cumulatively by 2030. In Europe, offshore wind power is expected to become the number one energy source in terms of power generation from 2040.

In Korea, the speed of wind power supply is still relatively slow. According to the Ministry of Industry, as of December last year, about 1.7GW of onshore and offshore wind power generation facilities were supplied in Korea. About 1.5GW of onshore wind power was supplied, and 142MW of offshore wind power was built. On the other hand, 4.1GW (tentative) of new solar power facilities was supplied during the same period.

The government plans to introduce a one-stop shop for wind power licenses and promote distribution by promoting large-scale offshore wind power projects centered on local governments.

At the first meeting of the wind power roundtable on this day, the progress of the wind power policy, the plan to promote carbon neutrality, the direction of carbon neutrality and the forecast of the contribution of wind power, the carbon neutrality and the industrialization of wind power will be shared.

Experts in industry, academia, and research plan to present their opinions on the role of wind power generation in realizing carbon neutrality and future policy issues.
