Go to the North Sea to buy squid with Taegeukgi sweet… Chinese fishing boats laugh at sanctions

The situation was revealed that North Korea illegally traded fishing rights to Chinese fishing boats, North Korean media NK News Pro reported on the 1st (local time). There were also fishing boats with Chinese five-song-honggi and Taegeukgi.

According to the Japanese Fisheries Agency data obtained by this media, a total of five fishing boats were caught entering North Korean waters from September to October last year. The Japanese Fisheries Administration surveyed the crew of the fishing vessel to confirm the method and actual condition of the North Korean fishing rights. Among them, the crew of the Chinese fishing vessel Fuyuan 28 and 28, which was investigated near the Goto Islands on September 30 last year, stated that they were on the move to buy and sell fishing rights in North Korean waters.

The UN Security Council adopted Resolution 2375 in December 2017 and banned North Korea from buying and selling fishing rights. Security Council Resolution 2371, processed in August 2017, bans the purchase of North Korean seafood. It was a sanction that was designed to block all means of making foreign currency in North Korea.

The crew of LinYuYun 0002, which had the Chinese flag and the national flag hung together, were 18 Chinese, who stated that they were planning to purchase frozen squid by contacting another Chinese fishing vessel operating in North Korean waters during an investigation by the Japanese Fisheries Administration. They also said that the transaction is done by providing fresh food and various supplies, not money, in exchange for taking over frozen squid.

As a result of searching by the ship name Rin Yu-yoon 0002, it turned out that there is no IMO number, which is a unique identification number given by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This is why it is believed that the Korean national police officers hung the Taegeukgi as camouflage to avoid surveillance.

Another Chinese fishing boat, Lin Yu-yoon, the crew of 0002 said they planned to purchase fishing rights by contacting North Korean naval boats in the South Korean Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). It also stated the exact latitude and longitude of the tangent.

The crew of Lulongwi 59295, a fishing vessel with a Chinese flag, also stated specific facts related to the purchase of North Korean fishing rights, such as the location of contact with the North Korean naval boat and payment method, during an investigation by the Japanese Fisheries Administration. They contacted the North Korean naval boat at a location designated by the North, moved to the North Korean waters, checked the condition of the fishing grounds in the sea area where they would be engaged in fishing, and paid the card payment to buy fishing rights.

The illegal fishing of Chinese fishing boats in North Korea’s waters is causing enormous damage to Korean fishermen. On November 2, last year, the “Chinese Ship Countermeasures Promotion Committee to Save Our Seas”, composed of Gangwon and Gyeongbuk fishermen, held a resolution contest on November 2, and said, “Fishing resources going south to the East Sea due to overfishing of hundreds of Chinese ships each year in North Korea’s East Sea fishing grounds. He said, “The government asks to stop fishing in North Korean waters by Chinese ships to protect their fishermen and marine resources.” According to the Countermeasures Committee, Chinese fishing boats illegally fished in North Korea’s East Sea waters overfish about 80,000 tons of squid every year. The scale of the damage amounted to about 220 million dollars (239.3 billion won).
