The German government welcomed US President Joe Biden’s decision to stop reducing US troops in Germany on the 5th.

According to Reuters and AFP, a spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, Steffen Seibert, said at a regular briefing on the day that “the US Army has been convinced that it is conducive to security between Europe and the United States and is in mutual interest.”

President Biden visited the State Department for the first time after taking office the day before, addressing the direction of foreign policy, reexamined the posture of US troops around the world and announced that he would stop relocating US troops stationed in Germany during this period.

Earlier in the Trump administration, the United States advocated an increase in its defense cost share and promoted the redeployment of US troops deployed to allies such as Germany and South Korea. In fact, the US Department of Defense announced in July last year that it would cut 11,900 out of 34,500 US troops stationed in Germany.

Starting with this decision, attention is paid to whether the US military reduction problem will also be resolved. However, there are observations that the possibility of actual relocation cannot be ruled out as President Biden puts a clues to the relocation of US troops in Germany, “until reconsidering the posture of US troops around the world.”
