[지앤이타임즈 송승온 기자] Korea Gas Technology Corporation (President Ko Young-tae) announced on the 22nd of last month that it was finally selected as a’overseas hydrogen-based public transportation infrastructure technology development’ conspired by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Land).

This competition project is a project to build and demonstrate a garage-type hydrogen bus charging station capable of producing hydrogen by receiving electricity from renewable energy in the overseas (UAE) area for a total of 4 years and 9 months (April 2021 to December 2025). Total project cost of 34 billion won (government expense 22 billion won, private contribution 12 billion won) will be invested, domestic demonstration in the first phase (April 2021-December 2023), and overseas in the second phase (January 2024-December 2025). I plan to complete the demonstration.

The lead agency, Gas Technology Corporation and 12 joint R&D institutes plan to promote hydrogen production in connection with renewable energy power, safety, charging system design and construction, and domestic/overseas cooperation.

The final goal of the research team is to lay the foundation for the overseas (Middle East) advance of the hydrogen public transportation system through the development and demonstration of hydrogen infrastructure technology capable of producing hydrogen over 35kg per hour, charging two buses simultaneously and twice in a row, and charging more than 1000kg per day.

Through this, it is expected that manufacturers will be able to export prototypes and KOGAS will be able to expand the hydrogen charging station construction and consignment operation business overseas.

In the first stage, a domestic demonstration site and hydrogen bus will be secured through a public offering by local governments, and a large-capacity hydrogen production and charging facility that can be operated even in the UAE local high temperature environment (50℃) will be developed and demonstrated.

Compressors (Kwangshin Machinery Industry), refrigerators (energy), and chargers, which are the core facilities of hydrogen bus charging stations, require charging protocols and safety technologies that can maintain pressure even in high temperature environments, and the technology will be developed through domestic and overseas demonstrations.

Hydroelectrolysis systems that produce hydrogen using renewable energy are also required to develop systems (Korea Institute of Energy Research, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, etc.) because high-temperature environments affect chemical reactions and hydrogen production.

In the second stage, the technology developed in the first stage is optimized locally and verified. It is expected to complete the overseas demonstration and the project by analyzing and verifying the impact of the actual environment overseas and improving the performance accordingly.

The completed hydrogen-based public transportation infrastructure technology will be used to expand the market and use of hydrogen buses to secure a pleasant urban environment by reducing pollutants and noise, and to create new markets such as the construction of mega hydrogen charging stations and water electrolysis systems. to be.

In addition, in the long run, hydrogen production and import business using low-cost renewable power can be carried out due to the promotion of overseas plant business, contributing to the stabilization of domestic energy. A number of companies, including companies, are expected to see export effects.

Ko Young-tae, president of the Gas Technology Corporation, said, “Through this project, we will promote the domestic public transportation infrastructure technology from hydrogen production to bus operation to the world and actively help domestic companies advance into overseas markets, contributing to vitalization of the hydrogen economy.”
