Gangwon inland 20 degrees below zero… Cold wave is expected to continue until early January

On the 31st, which is the last day of the year and Thursday, the whole country is expected to remain in the subzero zone all day, leading to a severe cold.

The Meteorological Administration announced on the 30th that the minimum temperature in the morning is -18 to -4 degrees and the highest temperature in the daytime is -5 to 4 degrees. Inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon are expected to drop to around -20°C in the morning, while inland Gyeonggi and northern Chungbuk and northern Gyeongbuk are expected to drop to around -15°C. It is expected to show a distribution around -10 degrees in the central and southern inland areas.

The worldly cold wave is expected to last for over a week. Until the 8th of next month, very cold weather is expected to continue in the central region with a temperature of around -10 degrees Celsius and a sensory temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. Even after the 8th, it is highly likely that the cold, which rises and falls from -11 to -7 degrees below zero.

This cold wave is analyzed as the effect of the cold air over the Arctic coming down to the Korean Peninsula through the jet stream that served as an’air curtain’.

An official from the Meteorological Agency explained, “As the Arctic temperature rises and the temperature difference between the low-latitude regions decreases, the cold air came down through the jet stream.”

On the other hand, on the 31st, the whole country will be generally clear, but a lot of snow will fall in Chungnam, Jeolla, and Jeju. The expected snowfall is 5 to 20 cm in the west coast of Chungnam and the mountainous areas of Jeolla-do and Jeju-do. Snow is expected to accumulate more than 30 cm in western Jeolla and more than 50 cm in the mountains of Jeju Island.
