From the new semester in March, free high school education is fully implemented. Free education for elementary, middle and high schools was completed 17 years after the free middle school education was completed by the Participatory Government in 2004.

The Ministry of Education announced on the 28th that it will join the ranks of free high school first-degree education from the new semester in 2021 following high school 3 in the second semester of 2019 and high school 2 in 2020.

Free high school education is a key national task of the current government, as the government provides four kinds of tuition fees, which were previously paid by students: admission fee, tuition, school operation support fee, and textbook fee.

The subject of free high school education is about 1.24 million students in the first, second, and third grades. The Ministry of Education analyzed that the annual tuition fee per high school student would be reduced by about 1.6 million won.

However, students enrolled in some private schools (94 schools as of the end of 2020, as of the end of 2020) determined by the head of the school for tuition and other payments according to the relevant laws and regulations are not eligible for free education.

Deputy Prime Minister Yu Eun-hye and Minister of Education said, “I think it is meaningful that the full implementation of free high school education will help reduce the burden of tuition for parents. “The starting line will continue to provide fair educational opportunities and strengthen the publicity of elementary, middle and high education. I will try harder for it.
