From daytime on the 28th in Seoul, a lot of snow falls due to a typhoon-class strong wind.

On the 28th and 29th, snow or rain accompanied by a typhoon-class strong wind was predicted nationwide. It is expected that up to 10 cm of snow will fall in the eastern part of Gyeonggi on the 28th, and the temperature in the morning of Seoul on the 29th will drop to -12 degrees Celsius, which will be very cold.

The Meteorological Administration said, “There is a side of not using the observation data,” regarding the recent failure to predict snowfall. “We will try to reduce forecasting failures by increasing the number of weather observations on the west sea side.”

On the 27th, the Meteorological Administration predicted that 1 to 5 cm of snow or 5 mm of rain would come to the central inland regions including Seoul and the metropolitan area. Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do (excluding the east coast), and Jeolla region (excluding the south coast of Jeollanam-do) are expected to accumulate 3 to 10 cm, and up to 15 cm in the inland Jeolla-do and the mountains of Jeju. The Meteorological Administration said, “In the case of Seoul and Gyeonggi Province (excluding the eastern part), it is more likely to become an icy road if the road is frozen in a wet condition due to snow rain rather than a lot of snow accumulation.” Explained.

From the afternoon of the 28th, as cold air flows in from the northwest, the temperature drops significantly, and the morning of the 29th is expected to be 12 degrees below zero in Seoul, 15 degrees below zero in Dongducheon, and 18 degrees below zero in Cheorwon. By the morning of the 30th, the morning temperature in the middle of the central and southern mountains will drop below -10 degrees Celsius, and strong winds of more than 90 km per hour are expected to further reduce the perceived temperature.

The Meteorological Administration explained that even if a similar cloud zone is introduced in winter, the uncertainty in the forecast of snow or rain is large depending on the ground temperature. This is because even a small temperature difference of 1 to 2 degrees turns into snow, and the time or snowfall may vary, and even within the same area, the amount of snowfall may vary greatly depending on the altitude and topography.

Meteorological Office reporter Park Lee-hyung said, “As the weather is changing so rapidly this winter, we have deployed manpower forward in the west sea, where there are few observation points, and detailed information will be released every 1-2 hours.”

Previously, the Meteorological Administration underestimated the amount of snow that fell by surprise, and on the 18th, it predicted that 3 to 10 cm of snow would accumulate on the way to work in central areas such as Seoul. However, in reality, little snow fell around 1cm in Seoul and Incheon. When it was underestimated, there was a riot on the way home from work in Seoul, and when it was overpredicted, it was criticized for wasting only the calcium chloride sprayed in preparation for the traffic on the way to work.
