Former Vice Chairman of JoongAng Ilbo passed away

The former vice chairman of the JoongAng Ilbo, former vice chairman Geum Chang-tae, who spent his life at the forefront of the media, passed away on the 5th. 83 years old.

Born in Andong, Gyeongbuk in 1938, the deceased graduated from the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy at Korea University. In 1987, when he served as editor-in-chief after serving as the editor-in-chief of the Editorial Bureau of Social Affairs and Editorial Committee, the case of the torture of Park Jong-cheol by the police broke out. The JoongAng Ilbo, which was an evening at the time, had already begun printing the first edition at the time when reporter Shin Seong-ho of the Ministry of Social Affairs (now Professor of Sungkyunkwan University) reported the case alone and confirmed the facts. When the new reporter started singing articles over the phone, the deceased set up a rotary press and put the article on the social side. The article’college shock death under investigation by the police’, published on page 7 of January 15, aroused national resentment, and became a catalyst for the uprising in June of that year.

After working as an editor, the deceased became the first reporter of the JoongAng Ilbo in 1999 to become president. In August of that year, during the thawing period following the inter-Korean summit in June 2000, he visited the North Korean sea as a member of 46 presidents of the media and met with Kim Jong-il, Chairman of the Defense Commission. After serving as vice chairman and advisor of the JoongAng Ilbo, he was appointed professor at the Graduate School of Journalism and Culture at Sejong University in 2002. Since then, he served as President of Sisa Journal and Vice Chairman of Seoul Media Group.
The deceased was also the chairman of the social welfare corporation Bogeumjari of Love, the president of the World Youth Volunteer Corps (now COPION), and the co-organizing chair of the 17th World Volunteer Congress (IAVE), and also worked hard to vitalize volunteer activities. For this merit, he received the National Medal of Merit, Camellia in 2003.

Bereaved family members include his wife Gwon Gyu-gyu, daughter Geum Hee-jo, professor of Media Communication Department at Sungkyunkwan University, Geum Hee-soo, son Geum Deok-hyun, director of Jungdo Education Foundation, and son-in-law Jae-ho Cho, professor at UC Davis of the United States. The vacant place is #302, the funeral hall of Korea University Anam Hospital. 8 am on the 8th of the month.
