Senkaku reconfirmed the application of the US-Japan Security Treaty
Suga and Biden promote early telephone talks

After the inauguration of the US administration, Joe Biden held the first telephone talks between the top security officials in the United States and Japan to discuss security issues such as regional conditions. In the currency, opinions were exchanged that Korea, the United States and Japan should cooperate on the North Korean issue.
According to NHK broadcasting on the 22nd, Japan’s National Security Commissioner Shigeru Kitamura and White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan talked for about 30 minutes the night before. In their first call, the two confirmed that the Senkaku Islands (Chinese name Diaoyudao), a territorial dispute between China and Japan, were subject to Article 5 of the US-Japan Security Treaty, which stipulates the U.S. duty to defend Japan.
After congratulating Sullivan’s inauguration, Director Kitamura expressed his intention to cooperate closely on global issues, including strengthening the US-Japan alliance, realizing a “free and open Indo-Pacific”, and countermeasures against the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19).
The two also agreed to cooperate on the issue of North Korea’s abduction of Japanese citizens, the most important issue of the Japanese government, which Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga selected. Director Kitamura said, “We agreed that the US-Japan and the ROK-US-Japan will continue to cooperate closely over the situation in North Korea.” In addition, it confirmed the policy that the so-called’quad four countries’, such as the United States, Japan, India, and Australia, are in close solidarity with the issues facing the region and the international community.
Prime Minister Suga is also pushing ahead with early telephone talks with President Biden. According to Kyodo News, the Prime Minister’s residence instructed the relevant department to schedule a call between the US and Japan as soon as possible. A high-ranking Japanese government official said, “At this (telephone) meeting, we will go into specifics (related to the application of the US-Japan security treaty on the Senkaku Islands).
