Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported on the 7th that the US Secretary of State Tony Blincoln, the head of diplomatic relations between the United States and China, and Chinese diplomatic officer Yang Jietsu, spoke on the phone on the 5th, but only confirmed differences in their positions, foretelling tough bilateral relations. .

The calls between the heads of diplomatic affairs of the two countries were made amid growing conflicts between the two countries.

President Joe Biden has not yet spoken to President Xi Jinping since his inauguration. It is unique among the world’s major countries. President Biden also referred to Xi as a “thug” during the presidential campaign.

In his first speech on foreign policy since taking office, he pointed out that “China is the most serious competitor.” And he added, “I will not ignore China’s economic plunder.”

Yang Jietsu’s diplomatic affairs bureau said, “If the Biden administration does not abandon the Cold War accidents like the Trump administration, the bilateral relations cannot be normalized.”

In this atmosphere, the heads of diplomatic relations between the two countries confirmed their mutual basic interests by holding currency for the first time since the inauguration of the Biden government.

US Secretary of State Blincoln pressed the US to defend human rights and democracy in Tibet, Hong Kong, and Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Regions in his first call with the Yangzetsu political office on the 5th.

Secretary Blincoln made it clear that the United States will defend our national interests, advocate for our democratic values, and hold China accountable for abuses of the international system.

“The United States will continue to uphold human rights and democracy values in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong,” he said, and said, “China should join in condemning the military coup in Burma (Myanmar).”

“The United States will work with its allies to ensure that China is held accountable for security-threatening activities in the Indo-Pacific, including the Taiwan Strait, and for damaging the normative international system.”

However, Yang Jietsu said that Hong Kong, Xinjiang and Tibet are “China’s domestic problems,” and “external forces should not intervene.” He added to Secretary Blincoln that “the United States must correct recent mistakes, and both sides must respect each other’s political system and path of development.”

In a video speech at the international forum on the 2nd, China is ready to cooperate with the United States to advance relations. He stressed that it will worsen, and that US interests will also be undermined.

He also urged “to strictly observe the principle of’One China’.” “The Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive key issue in Sino-American relations.” China regards the Taiwan issue as a key matter related to its sovereignty and territory. He warned against intervening in Taiwan.

Diplomatic experts agreed that the call between the heads of diplomatic affairs of the two countries confirmed each other’s Maginot line. The United States made it clear that it would intervene in the human rights situation in China under the cause of democracy, and China confronted that this is interference in internal affairs, and that if it is promoted, it will not neglect.

As a result, experts believe that the relationship between the two countries will not be resolved for the time being. “The two countries only confirmed the difference,” said Su In-hong, a professor at the Department of International Relations at People’s University. “This difference will become more evident over the Myanmar crisis.” He added, “The situation in Myanmar could lead to an all-out conflict between the US and China.”

Luxiang, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said, “It’s better to talk than not to talk, but if the US intervenes in Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang, the cooldown of the US and China will be prolonged.”

It is meaningful that the heads of diplomatic affairs from both countries had the first telephone talks, but SCMP analyzed that the cooling period between the two countries will inevitably continue for the time being, as both countries declared that they would not yield basic profits.
