Expanded operation of overseas direct purchase virtual card issuance service to all card companies from January next year

From January next year, if customers using overseas direct purchases pay with a card, all card companies will be able to use the’virtual card issuance service for overseas direct purchases’. This is because the number of overseas direct purchase customers is increasing, but concerns about the leakage of card information have been raised due to weak security.

The Financial Supervisory Service announced on the 27th that it will expand and implement the virtual card issuance service for overseas direct purchase, which is currently being implemented by some card companies, from next year to all card companies.

The target of this service is an international brand partnership card issued by a domestic card company. You can apply for the issuance method on the card company’s app or website before making an overseas online payment. The validity period can be selected from at least 1 week, and cannot be used after the period has elapsed. The number of payments and limits can be selected by the user.

This is because the number of overseas direct purchase customers has been increasing, but card information leakage accidents have occurred continuously.

According to the overseas payment status of domestic credit card members, the amount of overseas use in 2018 increased from 16,342.3 billion won to 17,172.8 billion won in 2019. This year, despite Corona 19, the payment of 6.42 trillion won was paid by the end of August. Of these, the amount of online payment was 8,503.3 billion won in 2018, 9 trillion 1125 billion won in 2019, and 4.359.7 billion won this year (accumulated at the end of August).

An official from the Financial Supervisory Service said, “As overseas direct purchases increase, the importance of information security for credit cards as a payment method is growing. We will expand the virtual card issuance service to all card companies to reduce the damage of customer card information leakage.”
