This year, 68-year-old Russian President Vladimir Putin threw himself in ice water even in the cold of -20 degrees Celsius. This is because of the Orthodox custom of the Epiphany holiday.

On the 19th (local time), Rianovosti news agency reported, “President Putin participated in the Epiphany bathing event this year,” citing spokesman Dmitry Peskov Kremlin Palace. In the video released by the Kremlin, President Putin breaks the ice in the shape of a cross and then goes into the water and draws a name for it three times.

Russian authorities did not disclose the exact location, but President Putin is known to have participated in a bathing event in the outskirts of Moscow this morning. It is the day when the temperature in the morning of Moscow State has dropped to -20 degrees Celsius.

Earlier, the Orthodox Church said, “I do not want to recommend that believers go into the water in the current situation where the virus outbreaks and many people have become ill due to the spread of the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19).” However, President Putin pushed for the acquisition of ice water without breaking conventional conventions.

On the other hand, Epiphany is a day to commemorate Jesus’ 30th birthday in Orthodox Church, including Russian Orthodox Church, when he was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River and appeared before the public.

In Russia, there is a tradition of visiting a cathedral from the eve of the night, dipping your hand in holy water, or taking a bath in cold water after breaking ice in rivers and reservoirs.
