Established’Green Hydrogen Forum’ for carbon neutrality… Establishment of private-centered platform for industry-academia and NGOs

[세종=뉴스핌] Reporter Eun-Seok Lim = To support clean energy policies such as the government’s carbon neutrality, the Green New Deal, and the hydrogen economy, a private-centered forum has been launched to begin full-fledged activities.

The Hydrogen Convergence Alliance Promotion Group, Korea Gas Corporation, Korea Gas Safety Corporation and the Environment Foundation announced on the 2nd that they held the ‘2021 Green Hydrogen Forum’ inauguration event in which the National Assembly, industry, academia, research circles, and civic groups participated.

The Green Hydrogen Forum was launched in July of last year as a follow-up measure by the 1st Hydrogen Economy Committee to promptly revitalize the industrial ecosystem and expand public acceptance. The inaugural general meeting was held together with live online broadcasting and offline to inform the public about the need and role of hydrogen economy and green hydrogen for realizing carbon neutrality.

The event was attended by 40 industry, academia, and research officials including Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun, Lee Hak-young, chairman of the Small and Medium Venture Business Committee of the National Assembly, Lee Hee-beom, former Minister of Commerce, Industry and Energy, and Choi Yeol, the chairman of the Environment Foundation.

Prior to the inaugural general meeting, a pre-ceremony forum was held with the theme of’The role of hydrogen economy to become a carbon-neutral society in 2050′. Lectures were given on carbon neutrality and the role of hydrogen economy, current status of hydrogen energy through big data, global hydrogen mobility status and strategy, and Germany’s green hydrogen activation policy.

Through the following preliminary general meeting, the direction of the formation and operation of the forum was confirmed, and a total of 42 members, including co-chairpersons and members, were commissioned. Former Minister of Industry, Lee Hee-beom and Choi Yeol, the Chairman of the Environment Foundation, were co-chaired as chairpersons. The committee members were commissioned as experts in each field, including the National Assembly (5 people), research institutes (8 people), industry (13 people), NGO (1 people), academia (11 people) and advisors (2 people) who participated as preparatory members.

In the future, the forum will discuss ways to promote carbon neutrality, such as expanding green hydrogen, to derive and propose private-level initiatives to revitalize the hydrogen economy.

Policy evaluation and direction at the private level through general meetings twice a year and working-level meetings four times a year focusing on proposals for policy directions and strategies, etc., suggestions for improvement directions for on-site difficulties such as regulations, and support for establishing systems and foundations to enhance acceptance. Suggestions, implementation tasks for each field, and supplementation plans are planned.
