Elon Musk, Tesla’s CEO, has released an overview of the carbon capture technology contest.
According to CNBC on the 8th (local time), Musk said he wants the contest-participating teams to demonstrate a technology that can expand their carbon capture capacity to the level of 1 giga (1 billion) tons.
CNBC broadcast cited data from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), explaining that 1 gigaton of carbon is equivalent to 10,000 aircraft carriers. It is also said to be like a massive 1119-foot (341m) block of ice that can cover the entire site of Central Park Park in New York.
Musk and the Musk Foundation presented a prize of 100 million dollars (about 111.2 billion won) to the competition. The competition is held through the non-profit organization’XPRISE’.
The competition will be held for four years starting on Earth Day on April 22nd. The XPRIZE will first award $1 million (1,121 billion won) to the top 15 teams that will advance to the finals one year and six months after the start of the competition.
In addition, 25 teams made up of students are selected and paid 200,000 dollars (200 million won) each. Then, at the end of the four-year competition, the 1st place team will be awarded 50 million dollars (56 billion won), the second place will be 20 million dollars (24.2 billion won), and the third place will be 10 million dollars (11.2 billion won) You will receive.
To win the carbon capture technology competition, Xprize must come up with a rigorously validated model. “Our goal is to achieve 10 gigabytes (10 billion) tons of carbon per year by 2050 by expanding efficient carbon capture technologies to combat climate change. It is to reduce.”
In a statement, Musk said in a statement, “We have to go to reduction, not carbon neutral. This is not a theoretical competition,” he said. “We want a team to build a 1 gigaton level carbon capture technology system.”
