Strengthening global carbon regulations… To survive, it is essential to switch to electric vehicles

New cars such as Ioniq 5 equipped with Hyundai and Kia’s’e-GMP’ launched

China Tesla also expands production capacity… The first year of the electric vehicle era

“2021 will be the true first year of the electric vehicle era. Electric cars of different qualities are pouring out.”

This is the common opinion of domestic and foreign auto industry experts. Until now, electric vehicles were remodeled from existing internal combustion locomotives, but from 2021, global automakers will launch a large number of vehicles that have been R&D for electric vehicles from the beginning. The strengthening of environmental regulations in major markets such as Europe, the United States, and China is expected to accelerate this trend. Modern·Kia Motors (000270)It also responds with a high-performance electric vehicle equipped with a dedicated electric vehicle platform (E-GMP). In this process, the global automobile market is expected to rapidly reorganize centering on electric vehicles, and some companies are expected to drop out of competition.

EV, market size surges by 21% every year

According to the automobile industry on the 31st, market research firm SNE Research estimated the global electric vehicle sales volume of about 6878,000 units in 2021. This is more than double the sales volume in 2020 (EV volumes estimated). SNE Research predicts that the global electric vehicle market will grow by 21% annually from 2021 to 2030, reaching 40 million units by 2030.

The factor behind the growth of electric vehicles is global carbon emission regulations. In Europe, where environmental regulations are the strongest, automakers face fines of up to trillions if they fail to meet their carbon dioxide emission targets. For example, Volkswagen, which accounts for about 25% of the European market, is expected to pay a fine of up to 1.83 billion euros (about 2.43 trillion won) in 2021 if there is no action. For automobile companies, the conversion of electric vehicles has become a problem of’survival’ rather than a choice.

Another major market, the US and China, is also seeing strong demands for electric vehicle conversion. China has decided not to sell internal combustion locomotives from 2035. China is still the largest market in the world where about half of the world’s electric vehicles are sold, but the proportion of electric vehicles is about 5% of the total sales. Conversely, it means that the largest internal combustion locomotive market will disappear by 2035. In the United States, President-elect Joe Biden has already announced that he will strengthen environmental regulations and grow the electric vehicle market. Even if it is not environmental regulations, the conversion of electric vehicles is essential to realize future vehicles such as autonomous vehicles, because electric vehicles with efficient energy consumption must be based.

Hyundai-Kia Motors launches exclusive brand Ioniq

Global automakers are actively responding to this trend. In particular, 2021 is expected to be the first year of’real electric vehicles’. This is because automakers that have been remodeling and selling existing internal combustion locomotives are releasing vehicles equipped with dedicated electric vehicle platforms.

Hyundai and Kia Motors are representative. Hyundai Motor (005380)Will release Ioniq 5 with E-GMP in 2021. This model, a medium-sized sports utility vehicle (SUV), is expected to have a maximum output of 313 horsepower, a maximum mileage of 450 km, and an instantaneous acceleration of 5.2 seconds from a standstill to 100 km per hour. Kia Motors is also releasing a CV (project name) equipped with E-GMP.

Chinese companies dreaming of driving electric vehicles are also expected to accelerate the leap forward. Not only electric car makers such as Nio and Xiaofeng, which have already received attention in the market, but also existing automakers have developed or are developing platforms for exclusive use of electric vehicles. Geely Motors plans to mass-produce the electric vehicle platform in 2021, and BYD will also unveil the platform within this year. Shanghai Motors is also jointly developing an electric vehicle platform with GM.

Tesla, which has already ranked first in the global electric vehicle market, is also speeding up. Its main market, China, will double its production capacity from 250,000 units at present. In addition, in July 2021, a new plant in Berlin, Germany, will be put into operation and the medium-sized SUV model Y will be produced. Powerful internal combustion locomotives such as Mercedes-Benz and BMW are also planning to release electric vehicles one after another. Benz is releasing large electric sedan EQS and semi-medium electric SUV EQA. BMW will also finish developing the semi-large SUV iX and introduce it to the market. Professor Pil-soo Kim of the Department of Automotive at Daelim University said, “In 2021, a full-fledged battle will begin with the launch of electric vehicles of various unique models.”
