Over the past decade, the number of books lending to students in university libraries has been cut in half, and the use of digitally provided electronic materials has increased significantly. On the 7th, the Korea Education and Research Information Service analyzed the statistics on 433 university libraries nationwide between 2011 and 2020. The number of books that one university student borrows from the library per year is from 8.3 in 2011 to 4 in 2020. It turned out to be reduced to volume. The Korea Education and Research Information Service said, “The change in information usage behavior from the way printed books were lent out to the way e-books were used was analyzed as the biggest factor. The cause” was interpreted. However, the number of books a current student buys per year has not changed significantly from 1.6 in 2011 to 1.7 in 2020. As explained by the Korea Education and Academic Information Institute, the purchase and use of electronic materials other than books in university libraries appears to have increased significantly. The average cost for a single university to purchase electronic materials during the year has increased by 50% from 290 million won in 2011 to 440 million won in 2020. The percentage of the total cost of purchasing electronic materials has also increased from 49% to 69% in 10 years. The number of one enrolled student using a commercial database nearly doubled from 130.8 to 253.7. Regarding this, the Korea Education and Research Information Service said, “Changes stem from the growing interest of users in the use of recently verified information resources, as well as the university’s efforts to expand electronic materials and revitalize use education in libraries.
