Editorial Writer of the Hankyoreh resigns from the Prosecutor General’s Candidate Recommendation Committee-Media Today

The Hankyoreh Editorial Writer Son Won-je, who was appointed as a non-executive member of the Prosecutor General’s Candidate Recommendation Committee for the successor to the former prosecutor general, announced his intention to resign.

Editorial Writer Son Won-je said in a call with Media Today on the 15th, “It is a state that I have conveyed the position to the Ministry of Justice that it would be better to withdraw after consideration.” Inside the Hankyoreh, concerns were raised that if the Hankyoreh participated in the appointment of a successor to the prosecutor general, where political and social conflicts were severe, the Hankyoreh’s participation in the election could expose them to unfair attacks.

The chairman of Geomchu-wi is Park Sang-sang, former Minister of Justice (non-executive). The five ex officio members are Kim Hyung-du, Deputy Chief of the Court Administration, Lee Jung-soo, Prosecutor General of the Ministry of Justice, Lee Jong-yup, Chairman of the Korean Bar Association, Chung Young-hwan, Chairman of the Korean Law School, and Han Ki-jeong, Chairman of the Law School Council.

In addition to former Minister Park, four non-executive members were appointed, including former Vice Minister of Justice Gil Tae-gi, Hankyoreh Writer Son Won-je, and Professor Anjin of Chonnam National University Law School.

Criticism has also been raised outside the Hankyoreh for the construction of the geom-coldity.

On the 12th SBS Radio’Lee Chul-hee’s Political Show’, Professor Kim Yoon-cheol of Kyung Hee University Humanitas College said, “I think it was composed of people who are in conflict over the reform of the prosecution while looking at non-partisan members. He pointed out that it is a composition that could stir up controversy over whether it would appoint the prosecutor-general candidate as a pro-governmental person.” I don’t understand why it was constructed that way,” he criticized.

The composition of the Geom-Cool Commission is specified in the Prosecutor’s Office Act. Looking at the provisions for non-existent members, the composition requirement for 3 out of 9 members is “a person who has knowledge and virtue, and has a lot of experience in various fields of professionalism, who does not have the qualification of a lawyer”. Members of the media community have been commissioned as a practice in accordance with this regulation. At the time when Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol was appointed in 2019, the prosecution committee formed prior to the appointment included Kim I-taek and the Hankyoreh waiting person. The prosecutor’s office is commissioned or appointed by the Minister of Justice.

Commissioner Son is critical of former President Yoon. In a column in February, he said, “It is a paradox that Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol’s actions are a factor that induces the ruling party’s season 2 acceleration.” He said, “The argument that the power of investigation should be completely removed and the shoots should be cut so that’Yun Seok-yeolsik’s prosecution politics’ is impossible again is the reason for gaining strength in the ruling party.”
