SK Telecom has 11st as a subsidiary, and announced a partnership with Amazon last year for commerce growth. A detailed picture has not yet been released, but one of the key points of cooperation is to make it easy to purchase Amazon products within the 11th Street platform. It is also a key question to what extent it can satisfy market expectations and consumer interest in cooperation with Amazon.
In the industry, there are opinions that eBay Korea is offering 5 trillion won as an expected sale price, so it may be burdensome to take over alone. For this reason, Shinsegae, Lotte, and Kakao are mentioned as promising candidates for acquisition.
In particular, it is said that the company that acquires eBay Korea can have a size comparable to that of Naver and Coupang, so it is highly likely that existing distribution companies will take over to gain an edge in the e-commerce market.
Both Shinsegae and Lotte can be said to be strong in offline distribution, but expanding business online remains a task. Shinsegae may try to expand its open market business and secure a distribution center through the acquisition of eBay Korea.
However, there are also observations that as Naver and E-Mart join hands, Shinsegae may step away from the acquisition of eBay Korea.
In the case of Lotte, it is expected that it will be able to increase its scale by acquiring eBay Korea to expand its e-commerce competitiveness and create synergy with offline stores.
