Abuse of steroids can cause serious side effects such as hair loss and infertility, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety warned. This is due to an increasing number of cases of illegally purchasing steroids on the Internet and administering them without a doctor’s prescription in order to strengthen muscles or increase exercise effects in a short period of time.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said on the 10th that “steroids such as anabolic (anabolic) steroids should not be used for the purpose of strengthening muscles or maximizing the effect of exercise, not for the purpose of treating diseases according to the doctor’s treatment.”

Anabolic steroids are specialized drugs composed of synthetic steroid components that promote the absorption of proteins into cells in the body. Since it has the effect of growing and developing muscles, it is used as a treatment for osteoporosis or growth failure. However, if a healthy person uses it incorrectly, it can cause side effects such as hypothyroidism, elevated liver levels, sexual dysfunction, and infertility.

According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, if steroids are used incorrectly or overdosed, there is a possibility that males may experience hair loss, testes shrinkage, sperm count reduction, gynecomastia, and females, such as masculinization, beard development, and menstrual irregularities. In adolescents, there can be serious side effects such as decreased thyroid function and stopped growth and bone development. The administration of illegal products manufactured in an unsanitary environment or contaminated with microorganisms may damage the skin or muscle tissue and, if severe, lead to sepsis.

An official from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said, “You should not buy and use steroids at places other than hospitals or pharmacies. If you are using them, stop even now, and if you experience side effects, you should consult your doctor or pharmacist.”
