Over the years, the domestic console game market has grown more than expected. According to the 2020 Korean game white paper published by the Korea Creative Content Agency, the console game market, which recorded 3.7% market share in 2018, has grown to a market that accounts for 4.5% of the total game market in 2019. The sales amount was 6946 billion won, up 31.4% from the previous year.

Considering that the market share of console games in 2013 was only 1% of the market, it has continued to grow steadily. The domestic console game market has recorded an average annual growth rate of 40% since 2016, and has now become a market of meaningful scale.

The Korea Creative Content Agency predicts that the sales volume of the domestic console market will reach about 870 billion won this year and about 1.2 trillion won by 2021. In addition to the increasing user interest in consoles, the outlook is that demand for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, which were released last November, and the Nintendo Switch, which are steadily gaining popularity, will continue.

In addition, the fact that major domestic game companies are targeting the console market with the aim of launching next year or later is another reason for the growth of the console game market. It is also interesting that major game companies that represent the domestic game market, such as NCsoft, Nexon, Netmarble, Pearl Abyss, and Smilegate, are developing console games.

Pearl Abyss is one of the most eye-catching game companies for its new console. At The Game Awards on the 10th, the Red Desert trailer video was released to draw attention from domestic and foreign console users. Red Desert, under development through a new engine developed by itself, is a game where you can enjoy intense action while moving around the open world.

In addition, games that combine the features of the shooting genre and collectible elements based on MMORPG elements such as Dokkaebi and Plan 8 are also attracting attention. These games are being developed with targets for release in 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Nexon and Smilegate are also developing new consoles that are expected to be released in 2021.

Nexon is developing a racing game Kart Rider Drift that supports cross play between PC and Xbox One.

As the name suggests, this game, which utilizes the intellectual property rights (IP) of Crazy Racing Kartrider, is based on Unreal Engine 4 and supports smoother movement and superior graphics than the original. During the second closed test of Glover last June, it received favorable reviews for its cute and deep driving sensation.

Smilegate is developing Remedy Entertainment, which developed the Titanfall series, and Crossfire X, an FPS game that uses Crossfire IP. Smilegate is in charge of the multiplayer part, and Remedy Entertainment is in charge of developing the single-player part.

Project TL.

NCsoft’s Project TL is also expected to be released next year. When NCsoft announced its earnings in the second quarter, it attracted attention with a statement that it is confident that Project TL will be released next year.

Project TL, which is being developed with Unreal Engine 4, has been known as a game that combines the unique features of Lineage with the features of the open world hack and slash. In addition, class-based growth, a clan-centered community, and game design that actively utilizes the laws of physics are factors that receive market expectations.

In addition to these large game companies, N Pixel and Lee Gi-mob are also representative game companies busy preparing for new console games.

NPixel’s Chrono Odyssey, developed by NPixel CEO Bae Bong-gun, is a fantasy MMORPG based on time and space ▲A new job system ▲Various worlds transcending time and space ▲Random dungeons crossing space ▲Large-scale RVR content ▲ It is a game that emphasizes combat action with high strategy and excellent control.

Gungrave Gore, which is being developed by Lee Gimob, is also a console game that is drawing attention from the market. The fact that a game based on the original cartoon was released as PlayStation 2 and received a good response at the time also raises interest in Gungrave Gore.

The original author Yasuhiro Naito is participating in the development, and Gimob Lee is preparing to advance globally by signing a global publishing contract between German media group Koch Media and Gungrave Gore in August.
