British filmmaker Michael Apted, who received the Peabody Award for the documentary series’Up’, passed away on the 7th (local time) at the age of 79.

According to the Associated Press and Reuters, Aptied’s agent said on the 8th that he died the previous day at his home in Los Angeles, California.

Director Apted was born in Aylesbury, England in 1941, and after graduating from Cambridge University, he took part in the directing of the drama’Coronation Street’ and the documentary’Up’ on Granada TV.

In particular, director Apted participated in the production of the documentary ‘7 Up’, which observed 14 children from 7 years old from various backgrounds in 1964, and then visited them every 7 years to capture how their lives are going.

Director Apted won the Peabody Award, dubbed the Pulitzer Prize for Broadcasting in 2012 for an up series.

In an interview with Slant Magazine in 2019, Apted said, “The Up Series was an attempt to see British society with a long-term perspective,” and “it was necessary to set an alarm for the class society.”

He said, “As long as I have my breath, I want to continue (up shooting),” but eventually, ’63 Up’, made in 2019, remained as the last series when he died.

He served as president of the American Supervisory Association (DGA) from 2003 to 2009.
