“Do you have any plans to go to the queer parade?”: Last question from the TV debate for the unification of Seoul Mayor Geum Tae-seop and Ahn Chul-soo

″Do you want to go to the queer parade?”

This is the last question from the first TV debate between independent candidate Geum Tae-seop and candidate Ahn Cheol-soo of the People’s Party, who finally fought to unify the candidates for the 3rd zone for the mayor of Seoul. Candidate Tae-seop Geum devoted his final question to the human rights of minorities.

Candidate Geum said, “As a member of the National Assembly, he participated in the queer parade in front of the city hall. It is embarrassing to go there. Ambassadors from the United States, Great Britain and major countries come out and walk around in a festive atmosphere. “Not one of our politicians comes out,” he said.

He then asked, “I think that if Candidate Ahn or me or those known as mid-centre politicians go to the queer parade as mayor of Seoul, they can make a small but important change.”

Candidate Chul-soo Ahn gave an answer that was somewhat different from the subject of Candidate Geum’s question.

Candidate Ahn said, taking the queer festival held in San Francisco, USA as an example. “There, the festival is held in the southern region, a little far from the center of the region. Those who have the will to see the festival see the festival. It means that the festival is not held in the center.”

At the same time, he said, “If you have a queer festival in Gwanghwamun, Seoul, there are people who come because they want, but aren’t there those who come for various reasons? Some people don’t want to see the queer festival. I think we should respect that part.”

Candidate Ahn said, “You have the right to express what you believe in, and the right to reject it must be respected.”

Therefore, Candidate Geum sighed and said, “I thought how difficult it would be for our society to go to a society without discrimination.” “It is the powerless people who can change politics in the third zone, those who do not have a party to represent themselves. I think it’s about speaking out for you.”

“It’s not a question of where the queer parade is held,” said Geum, who stressed that it was a very disappointing answer.

Questions and answers on queer between Candidate Geum and Candidate Ahn can be viewed from 1.5 hours.

Candidate Tae-seop Geum attended the Seoul Queer Culture Festival held in Seoul Plaza in 2018, a member of the Democratic Party, for the first time as a male active member of the district. At the time, he said, “Sexual minorities, for example, are left-handed. “Most people cannot tell left-handers that they should be right-handed just because they are right-handed,” he said.
