“Do not kill, do not touch…” exclaimed for 100 years, but gender equality is still far away

March 8 is’World Women’s Day’. It is a day to commemorate the rise of women workers in the United States in 1908 in honor of women who died in fire in their workplaces. The United Nations officially designated March 8, 1977 as’World Women’s Day’.

On March 8, 1908, 15,000 women workers from the United States gathered in New York to protest for the right to vote and for freedom of union formation. During the protests, they cried out, “Give me bread and roses.” Bread meant the right to live for women who suffered from low wages compared to men, and rose meant the right to suffrage. At that time, women workers in the United States worked 12-14 hours a day in poor fields, but were not given basic rights such as voting rights and union formation.
After the first event was held in Europe in 1911, movements demanding the elimination of gender discrimination and the improvement of women’s status have spread from around the world. On Women’s Day around the world, an event is held to distribute bread and roses. However, even today, well beyond Women’s Day 100 years, the demands of women are not very different from before. On March 8th, women around the world are crying out, “Do not kill, do not touch, do not discriminate.”

In Korea, Na Hye-seok and Park In-deok have commemorated World Women’s Day since 1920, but the pulse was cut off due to the Japanese imperial repression, and the commemoration began in 1985. The revised bill of the’Basic Act on Gender Equality’, which designates Women’s Day as a legal anniversary in 2018, was passed by the National Assembly.
