Divorce, which increased during each economic crisis, declined in the past year when the new coronavirus infection (Corona 19) crisis hit.

According to the population trend of the National Statistical Office on the 13th, the number of divorces until November of last year was 9,7331, down 4.2% from 10,1662 in the same period last year.

The number of divorces per year in 2019 was 11,831, and considering that the number of divorces per month in 2020 was 7,000 to 9000, the number of divorces per year is likely to decrease compared to 2019.

Since 1981, when the National Statistical Office compiled demographic trends and divorce statistics, the year that the number of divorces increased the most was 19988, when the International Monetary Fund (IMF) foreign exchange crisis occurred. The number of divorces from 91,160 in 1997 to 11,6294 in 1998, an increase of 27.6%.

In 2003, when the card crisis occurred, the number of divorces was 16,617, the highest since statistics were compiled. The rate of increase was also the highest since 1998, increasing by 15% compared to 144,910 cases in 2002.

The increase in the number of divorces between 1998 and 2003 was 1.0% in 1999, 1.7% in 2000, 12.7% in 2001, and 7.7% in 2002.

From 2004 to 2008, the number of divorces decreased for five consecutive years, but in 2009, when the aftermath of the global financial crisis, was 123999, an increase of 6.4% from the previous year.

After that, until 2019, the number of divorces declined or increased from the previous year, but the increase did not exceed 3%.

However, due to the Corona 19 crisis, the economic situation was as hit as the IMF economic crisis and the global financial crisis, but the number of divorces decreased.

Unlike other economic crises, the reasons why the number of divorces did not increase in the Corona 19 crisis are the decrease in the number of marriages and the adjournment of the court due to social distancing. In addition, divorce is mainly due to the high proportion of marriages less than 5 years or more than 20 years, and since marriages themselves have decreased within the last 5 years, divorce may not increase even during the economic crisis.

An official of the National Statistical Office said, “There is a decrease in divorce in terms of administration due to distance from Corona 19.” It is estimated to be,” he explained.
