Disposable plastics exit from China in earnest… Opportunities to enter eco-friendly companies

Trade Association Report… Expanded to all regions in 2026

From this year, as the ban on the use of disposable plastic products in various provinces in China is implemented in earnest, demand for eco-friendly products that can replace plastics is expected to surge.

Accordingly, an advice came out that Korean eco-friendly companies should actively enter into related markets.

According to a report on “Execution of China Plastics Restriction Policy” published on the 19th by the Chengdu branch of the Korea International Trade Association, the production and sale of foamed plastic food containers and plastic cotton swabs have been banned from this year.

This is in accordance with the’Proposal to Strengthen Plastic Pollution Control’ announced by the Chinese government in January last year.

Disposable plastics exit from China in earnest…

China’s plastic consumption amounts to about 20% of global plastic consumption.

About 3 billion plastic bags are used per day in China, and the use of plastic bags reached 4 million tons in 2019.

The amount of plastic waste generated that year was about 63 million tons.

However, according to the Chinese government’s plastic restriction policy, production of shampoos, conditioners, hand sanitizers, soaps, scrubs, and toothpastes added with fine plastic particles for a cleansing effect were also banned from the new year.

Sales will also be banned from 2023.

Non-degradable plastic bags, often used in stores and food delivery, have been banned from use in major cities this year.

From 2026, it will not be available in most parts of China.

Disposable plastic tableware and plastic packaging for parcels will also be banned nationwide in 2026, starting in major cities this year.

The Chinese government has also announced a bill that imposes a fine of up to 100,000 yuan (about 17 million won) for violating restrictions on the production, sale and use of disposable plastic products.

Accordingly, Chinese food service companies, hotels, supermarkets, and parcel delivery companies are responding by introducing paper straws and biodegradable plastic bags.

The food delivery platform, Meitou, has developed an eco-friendly packaging solution to provide it to tenants, and is also developing a lunch box collection system.

“The demand for plastic replacement products and eco-friendly biodegradable plastic products in China is expected to increase rapidly,” said Go Beom-seo, head of the Chengdu branch of the Korea Trade Association. They must actively advance and preoccupy the market.”
